A woman is most likely to get pregnant through sex that happens before and during ovulation (which just means when the egg is released from her ovary). Usually, ovulation happens about 14 days before your period starts. However, everyone’s bodies and hormones are different so there is no sure way to know. You could become pregnant from sex during your period if you have a short period cycle. If you don’t know how long your cycle is, or when you’re ovulating, this can sound pretty confusing.
The only 100% effective way to avoid an unintended pregnancy is abstinence – to not have sex! If you do decide to have sex, using a form of birth control and using barrier methods like condoms will protect you against pregnancy AND STDs!
